India Dialing Steps - At a Glance

This page provides a quick summary of all possible dialing combinations for calling to, from, or within India.

The following types of dialing are covered: inbound international dialing, outbound international dialing (ILD), domestic long distance dialing (NLD), and local dialing. For each, various combinations of dialing to and from landline or mobile phones are shown.

One thing to note is that India landline and mobile phones are basically on separate numbering systems. Knowing which type of phone you are calling to can help you be more sure of what dialing sequence is required.

Landline phone numbers have two parts: an area code (called STD code in India) and a subscriber number. Each part can vary in length, but the complete number is always 10-digits. When written, the 2 parts may or may not both be included.

Mobile phone numbers are also always 10-digits and always start with the number '9'. They are always written to include all 10 digits (where the leading ' 9x ' may or may not be broken out separately).

Inbound International Dialing to India

Dial to an India landline phone: To make an inbound international call to an India landline phone:

  • dial your international access code/IDD (lookup)
  • then India country code (+91 )
  • then 2- to 4-digit area code (lookup)
  • then 6- to 8-digit subscriber number (lookup)

For instance, to call from USA to a Bangalore, India landline number of 80 1234 5678, you would dial: 011 91 80 6789 1234. To dial from the US to an India city with 3-digit area codes, like Surat, you would dial 011 91 261 123 4567.

Dial to an India mobile phone: To make an inbound international call to an India mobile phone:

  • dial your international access code/IDD (lookup)
  • then India country code (+91 )
  • then 10-digit mobile number (lookup)

For instance, to call from London, UK to a Mumbai, India mobile number of 94 123 45678, you would dial: 00 91 94 123 45678. Since all India mobile number are of this same 10-digit format starting with '9x', this dialing sequence is applicable to any mobile phone in the country.

Outbound International Dialing from India (ILD Calls)

Dial from a landline phone: To make an international call from an India landline phone, you would:

  • dial ' 00 ' (India access code)
  • dial destination country code (1-3 digits) (lookup)
  • dial area code (if applicable)
  • dial local subscriber number (length varies)

For example, to call a number in the USA with country code +1, 3-digit area codes and 7-digit subscriber numbers (for both mobile and landline phones), you would dial 00 1 aaa nnn nnnn. So, for instance, to dial the New York City number 212 123 4567, you would dial 00 1 212 123 4567

Dial from a mobile phone: To make an international call from a mobile phone, you would follow the identical procedure as described above for dialing from a landline phone.

Only difference might be that with mobile phones, you can sometimes use the ' + ' symbol in lieu of the standard ' 00 ' international access code for India. Before using, please confirm with your carrier.

In both cases, you will need to track down the applicable country code, and the complete destination number (area code + subscriber number). You can lookup country codes here.

National Long Distance Dialing (NLD Calls)

To make national long distance calls (NLD calls), you need to dial an 11-digit number starting with a ' 0 ' -- the ' 0 ' being India's long distance code (aka NLD code or NDD code).

Landline to landline NLD dialing: To call a fixed line phone in another city from a fixed line phone, dial the STD code (including leading '0'), and then the complete 10-digit landline phone number. For example, to call the Delhi landline number 1234 5678 from Kolkata, you need to dial 0 11 1234 5678. Total digits: 11.

Landline to mobile NLD dialing: To call a mobile phone in another city from a landline phone, you need to dial the NLD code of '0' followed by the complete 10-digit mobile phone number. So, for instance, 0 94 123 45678. Total digits: 11.

Mobile to mobile NLD dialing: To call a mobile phone in different city (STD area) from another mobile phone, you need to dial the NLD code of '0' followed by the complete 10-digit mobile phone number. So, for instance, 0 94 123 45678. Total digits: 11.

Mobile to landline NLD dialing: To call a landline phone in different city from a mobile phone, you need to dial the NLD code of '0' followed by the complete 10-digit landline phone number. So, for instance, 0 11 1234 5678. Total digits: 11.

Local Dialing within the Same City / STD

Local calling applies to calls between phones within the same city or STD code area. Because mobile and landline phone numbers are basically two separate systems, when dialing from one to the other it is almost as if you are dialing a long distance call.

Landline to landline local dialing: To call a fixed line phone from a fixed line phone within the same city / STD code area, dial the subscriber number for the destination phone. Subscriber numbers vary in length from 6- to 8-digits depending on the applicable STD. The STD code is not required. For example, Bangalore subscriber numbers are 8-digits, as in 1234 5678, whereas Lucknow subscriber numbers are 7-digits, as in 123 4567. Total digits: 6-8.

Landline to mobile local dialing: To call a mobile phone from a landline phone within the same city / STD code area, you need to dial the entire 10-digit mobile phone number (e.g., 9x 123 45678). Total digits: 10.

Mobile to mobile local dialing: To call a mobile phone from a mobile phone within the same city / STD code area, you need to dial the entire 10-digit mobile phone number (e.g., 9x 123 45678). Total digits: 10.

Mobile to landline local dialing: To call a landline phone from a mobile phone in the same city, you need to dial the complete landline number, including STD / area code, with a leading '0', as if it were an NLD call. For instance, to call a Chennai landline number 1234 5678 from a Chennai mobile phone, you would need to dial 0 44 1234 5678. Total digits: 11.
